Why We Prefer Own-Root Roses

Own-root roses are usually more hardy than budded roses which can be killed at the bud union during a severe winter. Own-root roses may die to the ground but will come back as the same rose instead of an understock. Their longevity is legendary. Many varieties have lived for a more than a century.

Initially own-root roses are smaller than the budded roses you normally see. Own-root roses usually bloom the second year and become fully established in their third or fourth year. Most of our varieties are remontant. They bloom more than once a year.

Our varieties have been chosen for hardiness, disease resistance, toughness and fragrance. This is not to say that they will not get blackspot or mildew but that these diseases usually do not cause complete defoliation. We do not sell difficult roses! We strive to grow the types you can plant and almost forget about.

Own-root roses often cost more than their budded roses because fewer can be propagated in a given year.

Try a few of these living antiques. We are sure you will be entranced by their lushness and fragrance.

Clematis

We have found clematis to be excellent companions for roses. These plants compliment each other whether entwined with a climber or a once-blooming antique rose. Clematis are very easy to grow and we have avoided those badly susceptible to clematis wilt.

The old saying about clematis, that they like their feet in the shade and their heads in the sun, is simply not true. What they like is plenty of moisture during the growing season. Many will take lots of shade and many will take lots of sun. Good watering, fertilizing and mulching are what is needed.

Try these excellent vines as companions for your roses and you'll be amazed at how much additional color they provide in the landscape as well as how they help to cover up an unsightly leafless late-season climber.

BioVam

Biovam is a micorrhiza fungus which has a symbiotic relationship with its host plant. It has been found to do wonders for roses. It aids them in getting moisture during droughts and nutrition in poor soil. It helps the rose to be more robust, healthier, hardier and more floriferous.

All of the roses and clematis grown in our gardens have been treated with Biovam. We recommend it because we use it ourselves. Please consider using it in your garden.

The recommended links at the bottom page include a link where you may learn more about this fully organic product. From there you may link to the BioVam site where you can purchase it on line. I think you will be as pleased as I with this wonderful product. Our roses and clematis have never looked better.
